Overview

Milk testing and quality control is an essential component of any milk processing industry whether small, medium or large. Milk being made up of 87% water can in rare circumstances be tampered with. Moreover, its high nutritive value makes it an ideal medium for the rapid multiplication of bacteria, particularly under unhygienic production and storage at ambient temperatures. In order for any processor to make good dairy products, good quality raw materials are essential. A milk processor or handler will only be assured of the quality of raw milk if certain basic quality tests are carried out at various stages of transportation of milk from the producer to the processor and finally to the consumer.

Swift Silliker is proud to announce the opening of our milk laboratory in Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape. From this purpose built testing facility, Swift Silliker is now offering raw milk testing services. Using Combifoss FT+ instrumentation (a combination of Fossomatic FC and MilkoScan FT+), Swift Silliker can rapidly measure and report Somatic Cell counts (SCC), fat, protein, lactose, total solids (TS), Solids-non-Fat (SnF)and urea in milk.

Value-Added Services

We will shortly expand our services to perform culture testing of milk for the isolation and identification of pathogens. Antibiograms (disc diffusion susceptibility test) will be performed to determine the sensitivity or resistance of pathogenic bacteria to various antimicrobial compounds.

At Swift Silliker we understand the importance of fast turn-around times which is one of the key deliverables for our new testing services at the laboratory in Jeffreys Bay.

Sample Collection

Swift Silliker has a fleet of highly efficient drivers who will collect samples or deliver sterile sample containers to your premises in the greater Cape Town and Midrand areas. Sample collections from clients beyond these areas are maintained through door-to-door couriers.

Our drivers have been trained in sample handling procedures to ensure that samples arrive at the laboratory timeously and at the right temperature. Each car is fitted with a built-in fridge to ensure sample integrity during transport.

Sample Submission

Samples can be submitted during business hours (08h00 to 16h30) during the week or on Saturdays (by prior arrangement). All new/dormant clients should open an account before submitting samples to the laboratory.

Clients can download a sample submission form (or contact our Customer Service Department for a copy) to assist with selecting tests when submitting samples to the laboratory.
